Fall of the House of Usher Trailer: Netflix Takes on the Best HBO Show of the Decade
Based on the tales of Edgar Allan Poe, Mike Flanagan‘s final series for Netflix is “The Fall of the House of Usher,” and the brand new official trailer has arrived this morning. Carla Gugino co-stars in the series as Verna, a woman who may be supernatural in nature. While the Ushers like to project strength, they look very weak in the wake of Verna’s vendetta.
The Definitive Voice of Entertainment News
An “empire of wealth, privilege, and power” makes itself very clear in the trailer, as the Usher family, dotted with the star-studded cast full of Flanagan favorites, play off each other with all the snark and cattiness of Succession’s Roys. With a clever script by Michael Sparaga paving the way over a running time of just over an hour and a half, “Humane” is set on the grounds of the cavernous and remote estate of the York family patriarch, Charles (Peter Gallagher), a famed and powerful news anchor who has recently retired. Charles shares the home with his most recent wife, Dawn (Uni Park), who doesn’t say much and has an almost menacing way of preparing a lavish dinner. (Turns out Dawn had to close her restaurant because of the food shortage, so that partially explains her mood. Full explanation coming in a moment). After years of delivering hit horror shows on Netflix, from The Haunting of Hill House to Midnight Mass to The Midnight Club, filmmaker Mike Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy now deliver a limited series inspired by the collected literary works of Edgar Allan Poe, but with particular emphasis on short story "The Fall of the House of Usher." The family’s dark, shady past seemingly comes to light as heirs from the dynasty begin dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.
You can catch a few more Poe-Easter eggs in these Flanagan creations if you look carefully enough. Well, that’s surely a reference to Poe’s short story “The Cask of Amontillado,” if there ever was one. And, we feel there will be many more Poe Easter eggs for us to uncover. Of course, we hear the famous refrain “Nevermore” echo through The Fall of the House of Usher‘s trailer and even see a raven. Of course, we’re also happy to see some of Flanagan’s frequent collaborators in this The Fall of the House of Usher trailer. Flanagan’s monologue-heavy dialogue style is perfectly suited to juxtapose with the rapid-fire rapport of Succession, and the backstabbing industry drama blends seamlessly with the eerie horror twist that makes his works — and the works of Edgar Allan Poe before him — so gripping.
Gunning’s breakout role could also boost the chances of her co-star Nava Mau, who plays the love interest Teri, garnering attention for her performance. The ensemble cast will include Carla Gugino (Gerald’s Game, “The Haunting of Hill House”), Mary McDonnell (Scream 4), Carl Lumbly (Doctor Sleep), and Mark Hamill. As you've probably noticed, this is the last weekend of April. That means Hulu is about to lose some of its best movies before the new titles arrive May 1. And while we've already shared five great movies leaving Hulu at the end of April, those aren't the only terrific titles going out the door.
Netflix’s latest (and final) limited series from creator Mike Flanagan promises yet another exquisite turn that lands somewhere between art-piece and terror. But it certainly looks like The Fall of the House of Usher will leave us with a bang. The Fall of the House of Usher trailer starts off strong and then only gets wilder.
If any of the signees later reveal themselves to be snitches, they’ll get more than stitches. Not just out of the will, as Madeline (Mary McDonnell) explains, they’re dead. Also appearing in the series are Mark Hamill as Arthur Pym, the family's ruthless attorney and clean-up guy; Crystal Balint as Morella "Morrie" Usher, wife of Frederick and mother of Lenore; Matt Biedel as Bill T.
But long-buried secrets are dug up when a supernatural entity from their past, the shape-shifting Verna (Carla Gugino), starts targeting and killing the heirs to the Usher fortune. If you’ve ever read Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, then you know that it doesn’t have a story long enough to support eight episodes of television. However, for Mike Flanagan’s final project at Netflix, the upcoming miniseries for The Fall of the House of Usher will be drawing upon more than just Poe’s original story. Flanagan incorporates elements of Poe’s other tales to expand the story of the doomed Usher family. And if the first trailer is any indication, Flanagan is also adding a touch of Painkiller and Succession to the gothic horror of Poe. Is that a terrific or horrific time we’re alluding to in the headline?
Check out character descriptions and our first good look at Mike Flanagan’s Poe-inspired series below. Based on the Edgar Allan Poe story of the same name, the horror series follows sibling duo Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell), who are at the front of their Fortunato Pharmaceuticals empire. Together, the Usher’s have established an empire of wealth, privilege and power — but at a cost.
